Discovering Connection and Conservation at Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui

This past summer, we had the opportunity to attend Virtuoso Travel Week, the premier global event for luxury travel. Every year, we gain valuable insights, and this time, one standout takeaway was how Maui is quickly becoming the next must-visit destination. This made us even more excited to be invited on a recent Familiarization (FAM) trip to the Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui.

We were so eager to be able to go back to a destination that has always been so near and dear to our hearts. The memories we created there were infused with the spirit of 'ohana (family), intricately woven into every interaction and moment shared. As we reflect on our time at Fairmont Kea Lani, we are excited to share some insights from Virtuoso Travel Week that rang true.

Community-Based Tourism on the Rise

Travel is evolving, and community-based tourism is becoming the heart of this transformation. It's about creating experiences that benefit both visitors and locals—a beautiful exchange of culture and connection. At Fairmont Kea Lani, we witnessed this firsthand. One of our contacts at Fairmont explained how her husband plays a key role in ensuring that any new developments are culturally focused and thoughtfully sustainable.

This commitment shines through every aspect of the guest experience. The lobby, affectionately called "Pilina," means connection and reflects how the hotel fosters ties within the community. In the restaurant, intimate tables are thoughtfully arranged to promote conversation rather than highlight stunning views. You and your companions are drawn into a deeper connection as you cook over hot stones, engaging face-to-face and savoring the shared experience. Activities such as hula and ukulele lessons and lei-making are offered in the Hawaiian Cultural Center, allowing visitors to dive into authentic Hawaiian traditions. It's these thoughtful details that make community-based tourism truly unique.

Slowing Down to Savor Every Moment

In today's fast-paced world, travelers are beginning to slow down and truly connect with their destinations. They want to savor the moments, not just rush through a checklist. During our trip, we felt this spirit in the Hawaiian Canoe Experience. We started the day with a moving sunrise chant ceremony. Leaving our phones behind, we had the remarkable opportunity to swim alongside vibrant marine life, encountering turtles and majestic manta rays in the pleasantly warm waters. With breathtaking views of the sun rising behind the hotel, it felt as though we were living a dream.

The entire experience transcended mere sightseeing —it invited us to connect with the environment and feel its pulse. Moments like these encourage us to be present, breathe in the beauty around us, and create lasting memories without the pressure of capturing the perfect photo.

Conservation Efforts Taking Center Stage

Another key takeaway from our FAM trip was the impressive conservation efforts that are taking place. Travel providers are now prioritizing big conservation projects to reconnect people with nature while restoring natural habitats. In collaboration with Skyline Conservation, Fairmont Kea Lani has launched "Rooted in Aloha," a reforestation initiative. We spent a meaningful afternoon planting trees, contributing to a brighter future for our planet. They aim to plant 5,000 trees by the end of 2024, restoring native forests and educating visitors about Maui's delicate ecosystem. When you zipline with Skyline Hawaii, you're not just enjoying an exhilarating experience but also funding vital conservation efforts. It's a thrilling way to support sustainability while soaking in breathtaking views!

Thoughtful Partnerships for a Sustainable Future

Another standout aspect of our visit was the thoughtful partnerships cultivated by Fairmont Kea Lani. Every brand they collaborate with is carefully chosen—organic, farm-to-table, and sustainable. Every effort is made with sustainability in mind, from the distillery process to farming. We witnessed this thoughtfulness woven into every aspect of the itinerary, from start to finish. These partnerships are more than just a marketing ploy; they are a sincere dedication to creating a positive impact.

The FAM trip to Fairmont Kea Lani was an exciting immersion into community, connection, and conservation. From the heartwarming 'ohana spirit to thoughtful partnerships, every moment was a testament to the power of meaningful travel.

If you're ready to experience the magic of Maui, consider embarking on a journey beyond the usual tourist trails. Whether it's community-based tourism, savoring each moment, or contributing to conservation efforts, there's a world of possibilities waiting for you. Who knows what connections and memories you'll make along the way?
